Do you charge for initial consultations?
Cynthia Buhr offers a free 30 minute consultation, either in person or over the phone. Cynthia does not charge because the purpose of the conversation is not to give legal advice, but to determine what, if anything, Cynthia might be able to help you with and what the minimum fee would be. If you cannot afford Cynthia's services, Cynthia will try to refer you to self-help resources and non-profit organizations that may be able to provide some assistance. In the consultation, Cynthia tries to help you decide how and if to move forward including a road map of what a possible approach would be, if representation would be appropriate.
How long will it take to complete my family law matter?
It could take anywhere from 3 months to slightly over a year depending on the matter. Some matters can be resolved quickly, while others take time. Due to the nature of family law, it can be difficult to guarantee any specific timeline. Cynthia tries to finish every case as quickly as possible from day one, but sometimes delays and continuances are an unavoidable part of litigation.
How much will my family law matter cost?
For uncontested matters, Cynthia frequently charges a flat fee - $800 - $1500, depending on the matter. For contested cases, Cynthia typically requires an advance fee of $5000 with an ongoing replenishment required as needed until 90 days prior to trial, at which time there may be a requirement for a larger trial advance fee, to be determined based on the complexity of your case. Cynthia's hourly rate is $250-$350 per an hour depending on the type of matter.
How do I know what approach to take, or whether my case is contested or uncontested?
Cynthia will discuss with you at the initial consultation the different approaches, and together you will determine what will best fit your case. Some cases can be resolved through informal negotiation, others through mediation and collaborative law, and still others through litigation. It just depends on the facts of your situation.
